Key Fishing Terrain & Structures

Terrain and underwater structure play an important role in fishing success at Lake Wallenpaupack. Fish use these features for feeding, cover, and changes in water depth. Understanding where these structures are located can greatly improve your chances of finding active fish.

Several natural features throughout the lake consistently hold fish. Deep channels, rocky points, and weed beds each provide different types of habitat and attract different species throughout the season.

Deep Channels

Deep channels often hold striped bass and walleye, especially during the warmer months when fish move to deeper, cooler water. These areas can be productive for trolling or fishing along depth changes.

Rocky Points

Rocky points are common feeding areas for smallmouth bass and walleye. Fish often patrol these areas looking for baitfish, making them great spots to cast along drop-offs and rocky edges.

Weed Beds

Weed beds provide excellent cover for largemouth bass and panfish. These areas are especially productive in warmer months when fish use the vegetation for protection and ambush points.

Docks & Structures

Boat docks and marinas provide shade and structure that attract smaller baitfish. Crappie and bass frequently gather around boat docks and marinas. Structure creates ideal hiding spots and feeding zones

Hydroelectric Water Releases

Lake Wallenpaupack is operated as a hydroelectric reservoir. Water releases can cause rapid rises in the Lackawaxen River downstream, which anglers should be aware of when fishing below the dam.

Man Made Fishing Structures

In addition to natural terrain, Lake Wallenpaupack also contains two types of man-made fish habitat structures designed to improve fishing and fish populations.

Porcupine Cribs

These structures are made from bundles of branches anchored underwater. They create shelter for baitfish and attract species like bass, crappie, and perch.

Spawning Beds

Spawning beds are gravel areas placed in shallow water to support fish reproduction. They are often used by species such as bass and sunfish and can become productive fishing areas during and after spawning season.
